The Vulcan.NET Training CD
If you're using Vulcan.NET, this CD is made for you. No matter if you're an absolute beginner with Vulcan.NET or
still struggling with all the new stuff in .NET.
Originally, i.e. back in 2006, this CD started as companion CD for standard Vulcan training courses or in-house training. If
you can talk to your students the CD does not need to have as self-explaining as possible and as polished as it is now.
You can also adjust your pace to the skills of your audience. These were major points in my decision not to sell the
CD, although there have been quite some requests. So the decision to sell it meant a lot of additional work. And finally
it will be completed. The release date of the 1st public edition is March 8th, 2010 (shipping date!). As you may expect it has all been
done in German. So you'll get a German Edition only, in the first place. But if you're not able to read German and you're patient enough, here's good
news for you. The translation of the 300 pages documentation in narrow print is in progress now. The designated release
date of the 1st English Edition is May 19th, the day before DevShare 2010 starts. Changes to official release dates will be published on the home page here.
VNT CD Contents
The following items listed are included with VNT CD:
- Code, Code, Code
You'll find a lot of code to get you started on this training CD. A detailed list can be here.
- VNT Documentation, aka "VNT Book"
This 'Book' is delivered as printable and searchable PDF. It has approx. 300 pages in version 1.0 in narrow print. A detailed
description can be found here.
- Free software or demo versions
You'll find a section on VNT CD including a lot of useful utilities or demo versions of such. Feel free to test them. The 'Book'
includes descriptions of some.
The code
For most people buying the CD the code samples are the most important thing. They normally don't read anything except how to get to the
code. They expect they'll compile and start after double-clicking the solution file and everything they want
to know is in the code. If you're in this class you must be very disappointed with most of the code provided with the
.NET Framework SDK. Many third party developers of Visual Objects add-ons and other libraries put a lot of
effort in building examples as self-explainatory as possible. For some examples on VNT CD this may also be true for the majority among you.
But as the origin of the CD was a companion CD for training courses this may not be true for all code examples. So
please follow my advice and do read the VNT docs. I'm not only confident this will help you better understand the code, I'm sure
it will give you a lot of extra information.
A Vision of Code Samples
The Documentation
First off, almost all code examples are explained in depth in VNT docs. It's by far not just a nice reprint of them. Use the docs as
a searchable knowledgebase if you use the PDF version. I for one prefer the printed version. It has a good
index to search and includes a lot of cross references.
Some sections may give the impression that they're just a Vulcan remake of some code provided on MSDN, at first glance. But rest assured all of them still
do go some steps beyond. And if not, you still have the Vulcan version, and sometimes the conversion may require some fiddling, at least
if you're new to code transforming.
The tips and tricks sections included with almost all chapters are
based on hours of frustrating debugging sessions and internet research. Sooner or later you'll just gonna love them.
